Colombian
writer, whose work 'One Hundred Years of Solitude' won the Nobel Prize
for Literature in 1982, has passed at the age of 87 years.
Gabriel Garcia Marquez , the Colombian writer with stories of love and
hope that brings Latin America into the lives of millions of readers
and put to the magical realism literary map , has died at the age of 87
years , on Thursday ( 17/4 ) .
Prolific writer who began his career as a newspaper reporter , Garcia Marquez's masterpiece is " One Hundred Years of Solitude , " the epic story that is like a dream dynasty , won him the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1982 .
Garcia Marquez died at his home in Mexico City , according to sources close to the family . He has returned from the hospital last week due to illness of pneumonia . Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos confirmed his death.
" A thousand years of loneliness and grief over the death of Colombians best ever ! " Santos said.
" With the death of Gabriel Garcia Marquez , the world has lost one of the best visionary writer , one of my favorites as a teenager ... The family and friends may find comfort from the fact that Gabo 's work will continue to live until generations later , " said U.S. President Barack Obama.
Known by friends and fans as " Gabo " Garcia Marquez is the author of Latin America 's most famous and beloved , and his books have sold tens of millions of copies.
Although it has produced stories , essays and several short novels like " Leaf Storm " and " No One Writes to the Colonel " in the 1950s and early 1960s , he had difficulty for years to find his voice as noveli.
But he found it dramatically with " One Hundred Years of Solitude , " instant publishing success in 1967 called the " Don Quixote of Latin America " by the late Mexican writer Carlos Fuentes.
The book tells the story of seven generations of the Buendia family in the fictional village of Macondo , based Aracataca city on the Caribbean coast where Garcia Marquez was born on March 6, 1927 and was raised by his grandparents on his mother's side.
In the novel , Garcia Marquez combine events with magic and supernatural details of everyday life and political realities of Latin America.
Sometimes funny and also tragic , the book sold more than 30 million copies and helped drive the explosion of Latin American fiction.
Garcia Marquez said he found the inspiration for the novel from childhood memories of her grandmother's stories , wrapped in folklore and superstition , but delivered with a flat.
" He told things that sounded fantastic and supernatural , but tell it with very reasonable , " he said in an interview in 1981 . " I find that I have to do is believe in yourself , and write the same expression as my grandmother : the flat face.
"Although " One Hundred Years of Solitude " is his most popular work , other books including the classic " Autumn of the Patriarch " , " Love in the Time of Cholera " and " Chronicle of a Death foretold."
